The best way to care for Sunspots/Age Spots

Φ 老年斑 / 曬斑

Table of Contents

A Sunspots also known as a sun-induced freckle or solar lentigines, is a dark (hyperpigmented) lesion caused by natural or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light. Solar lentigines may be single or multiple. This type of lentigo is different from a simple lentigo (lentigo simplex) because it is caused by exposure to UV light. Solar lentigines are benign, but they do indicate excessive sun exposure, a risk factor for the development of skin cancer.

Sunspots most commonly occur in older adults, particularly those who sunburn easily and fail to tan, but they may also occur in children.

Sunspots typically appear on areas exposed to natural or artificial UV light. They appear as well-defined, light brown to black, flat spots. In people who have been treated with a form of UV light therapy called PUVA, sunspots may occur in areas of the skin not exposed to UV light.

Exposure to UV radiation can cause Sunspots. You’re more likely to get this condition if you:

  • have fair skin
  • have been exposed to the sun a lot, or have had several sunburns
  • tan indoors
  • have had phototherapy or radiation therapy
  • In other cases, an inherited syndrome can cause lentigines.

People of all ages and both genders can get sunspots.

≡ Melasma

The best way to (nearly) eliminate melasma

(aka Chloasma Faciei)

Φ 黄褐斑

Melasma is a common acquired skin disorder that presents as a bilateral, blotchy, brownish facial pigmentation.

This form of facial pigmentation was previously called chloasma, but as this derives from the Greek meaning ‘to become green’, the term melasma (brown skin) is preferred.

Melasma is a common skin problem. The condition causes dark, discoloured patches on your skin.

It’s also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” when it occurs in pregnant women. The condition is much more common in women than men, though men can get it too. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 90 percent of people who develop melasma are women.

Medications and scented products — new targeted therapies for cancer and perfumed soaps, toiletries, and cosmetics may cause a phototoxic reaction to trigger melasma.

Researchers are examining the roles of stem cell, neural, vascular, and local hormonal factors in promoting melanocyte activation.

Melasma is more common in women than in men, with an onset typically between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Melasma is most common in people who tan easily or have naturally brown skin (Fitzpatrick skin phototypes III, IV). It is less common in people with fair skin (Fitzpatrick types I, II) or black skin (Fitzpatrick types V, VI).

Melasma causes patches of discoloration. The patches are darker than your usual skin color. It typically occurs on the face and is symmetrical, with matching marks on both sides of the face. Other areas of your body that are often exposed to sun can also develop melasma.
Brownish colored patches usually appear on the: cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, chin.

It can also occur on the neck and forearms. The skin discoloration doesn’t do any physical harm, but you may feel self-conscious about the way it looks.

If you notice these symptoms of melasma, see your healthcare professional. They might refer you to a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in treating skin disorders.

It isn’t totally clear what causes melasma. Darker-skinned individuals are more at risk than those with fair skin. Estrogen and progesterone sensitivity are also associated with the condition. This means birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone therapy can all trigger melasma. Stress and thyroid disease are also thought to be causes of melasma.

Additionally, sun exposure can cause melasma because ultraviolet rays affect the cells that control pigment (melanocytes).

Factors implicated in the development of melasma include:

Family history — 60% report affected family members

Sun exposure — ultraviolet and visible light promote melanin production.

Hormones — pregnancy and the use of oestrogen/progesterone-containing oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices, implants, and hormone replacement therapy, are implicated in one-quarter of affected women; thyroid disorders can be associated with melasma.

FINE LINES

What are Fine Lines?

Fine lines are small, shallow creases that form on thin, delicate skin. Fine lines on your face are associated with repetitive movements (think: frowning, smiling, squinting, and laughing).

You’ll usually see these fines lines first around your eyes and mouth.   This is because the skin there is relatively thin and moves a lot during the day.

On a more technical level, fine lines are less than two millimeters deep and are associated with the earliest signs of aging. Over time, these fine lines can develop into deeper folds and wrinkles.

What are the symptoms of Fine Lines?

The first visible fine lines appear around the eyes.

Fine lines around the eyes are often the first visible sign of skin aging and are known as ‘crow’s feet’ or ‘laughter lines’. This is because the thinner skin in this area is more prone to developing lines than elsewhere on the face. There fine lines develop into wrinkles and get more pronounced over time.

What causes Fine Lines?
Loss of collagen and elastin

Sun exposure
Genetics
Aging
Fair skin
Dry skin
Smoking
Repetitive movements
Side sleeping

≡ Broken Capillaries

The best way to care for Broken Capillaries

(aka Telangiectasia)

Φ 毛细血管破裂

What are Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries are also called “spider veins” — occur when they’re dilated, or enlarged, just beneath your skin’s surface. This results in small, red lines that spread out into a web-shaped form. They can develop anywhere on the body, but they’re more common on the face and legs.

While harmless, Broken Capillaries can become a nuisance if they make you self-conscious.

The good news is that spider veins are typically treatable.

You first need to figure out the underlying cause.

What are the symptoms of Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries are tiny blood vessels that have burst under the skin that can appear in any location on the body, but are especially noticeable in the nose area or other regions of the face.

The red veins take on the shape of spiderwebs, which is why they are also called “spider veins.”

What Causes Broken Capillaries and risk factors of Broken Capillaries?

Some people tend to develop spider veins more than others. The fact is that broken capillaries can happen to anyone at any age, including children. Your risk factors depend on the particular cause.

There are many causes of broken blood vessels on the face. They include:

Heredity and genetics

For unknown reasons, spider veins tend to run in families. Individual risk factors also increase with age.

Pregnancy

An increase in estrogen hormones during pregnancy can lead to broken blood vessels. Pregnancy-related spider veins heal on their own after delivery. Skin changes are common in pregnancy.

Rosacea

This common skin condition leads to excessive redness and flushing. With erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, broken blood vessels are common.

Sun exposure

Excessive sun exposure can enlarge your blood vessels. If you get a sunburn, the top layer of skin may peel and temporarily make some of the blood vessels in your face more noticeable.

Weather changes
Hot weather increases blood vessel dilation.

Environmental or chemical irritants.

Alcohol consumption

Moderate or occasional alcohol consumption can cause your skin to flush due to the enlargement of blood vessels. Binge drinking and heavy alcohol use can eventually lead to spider veins.

Injuries

Minor to significant injuries can lead to bruising. With bruises on your face, broken blood vessels may also be noticeable.

Vomiting or sneezing

Sudden, extreme pressure in your face from a violent sneeze or a vomiting spell can break the blood vessels in the skin.

The best way to care for Dehydrated Skin

Φ

Dehydrated skin means that your skin is lacking water. It can be dry and itchy and perhaps dull looking, too.

Your overall tone and complexion may appear uneven, and fine lines are more noticeable.

While dehydrated skin can be a nuisance, it’s relatively easy to treat with the right lifestyle changes.

Treatment begins from the inside out to replenish and maintain hydration throughout your body.

Dehydrated skin can appear dry, but it’s not the same has having a dry skin type.

The symptoms of dehydrated skin can include:

  • a feeling of tightness
  • mild to severe flaking and scaling
    rough skin texture
  • sensitivity, itchiness and inflammation

Fine lines dehydration can cause the following symptoms:

  • itchiness
  • dullness
  • darker under-eye circles
  • sunken eyes

There are numerous causes of dehydration, including:

≡ Dull Skin

The best way to care for Dull Skin

Φ

Dull skin is skin that looks lacklustre, flat, or even grey, and may even feel rough or bumpy to the touch. What causes dull skin? It’s the result of dead skin cell build-up on the surface of your skin, and it can happen at any age and in any weather.

Dull skin may be accompanied by the following signs and symptoms:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Roughness in the skin
  • Lack of skin elasticity
  • Fine lines
  • Discoloration
  • Sagginess or wrinkling
  • Lentigines and age spots
  • Dryness
  • Itchiness
  • Dark undereyes

Dry skin
Think about how a dried, shriveled up apple looks compared to a fresh one full of moisture—the same idea is what happens to your skin when it’s dehydrated.  Without moisture, the skin becomes dry and dehydrated, which can in turn leave it looking dull.  Dry skin also makes fine lines and wrinkles look even more harsh.

Not enough moisturizer, dry climates, long hot showers, and indoor air can all contribute to drying out your skin.

Excess Dead Skin Cells

The skin naturally sheds away dead skin cells but as you age that rate at which that happens slows down. When these dead skin cells start to build up it blocks the fresh, new skin underneath from shining through.

Aging
As we age, the amount of moisturizer our skin naturally produces decreases along with collagen production (aka what makes babies faces so plump), while melanin production increases, leading to more dark spots for an uneven skin tone.

Environmental Damage
Sun exposure and environmental pollution produce free radicals in the skin that harm cells and can also lead to excess pigment, loss of collagen, and skin damage.

Stress
Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol in the body and skin, which contributes to increased inflammation of the skin.

Cortisol increase in these cases can also worsen inflammatory skin conditions, like rosacea and acne, but can also contribute to an uneven, dull complexion.

≡ Sunburn

The best way to care for Sunburned Skin

Φ 曬傷

Sunburn is red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. It usually appears within a few hours after too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunshine or artificial sources, such as sunlamps. Home remedies can usually provide sunburn relief, but sunburn may take days to fade.

Intense, repeated UV light exposure that results in sunburn increases the risk of other skin damage, such as dark spots, rough spots, and dry or wrinkled skin. It also raises the risk of skin cancers such as melanoma.

You can prevent sunburn and related conditions by protecting your skin. This is especially important when you’re outdoors, even on cool or cloudy days.

Sunburn signs and symptoms can include:

  • Changes in skin tone, such as pinkness or redness
  • Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Small fluid-filled blisters, which may break
  • Headache, fever, nausea and fatigue, if the sunburn is severe
  • Eyes that feel painful or gritty
  • Any exposed part of your body — including your earlobes, scalp and lips — can burn. Even covered areas can burn if, for example, your clothing has a loose weave that allows ultraviolet (UV) light through. Your eyes, which are extremely sensitive to the sun’s UV light, also can burn.
  • Sunburn signs and symptoms usually appear within a few hours after sun exposure. But it may take a day or more to know how severe the sunburn is.

Within a few days, your body may start to heal itself by peeling the damaged skin’s top layer. After peeling, your skin may temporarily have an irregular color and pattern. A bad sunburn may take several days to heal.

    Risk factors for sunburn include:

    • Having light skin, blue eyes, and red or blond hair
    • Living or vacationing somewhere sunny, warm or at high altitude
    • Working outdoors
    • Swimming or spraying your skin with water, as wet skin tends to burn more than does dry skin
    • Mixing outdoor recreation and drinking alcohol
    • Regularly exposing unprotected skin to UV light from sunlight or artificial sources, such as tanning beds
    • Taking a drug that makes you more likely to burn (photosensitizing medications)

Factors More Prone to Sunburn: fair skin, blue eyes, and red or blond hair.

Living or vacationing somewhere sunny, warm or at high altitude, working outdoors, swimming or spraying your skin with water, as wet skin tends to burn more than does dry skin.

Mixing outdoor recreation and drinking alcohol.

Regularly exposing unprotected skin to UV light from sunlight or artificial sources, such as tanning beds.

Taking a drug that makes you more likely to burn (photosensitizing medications).

Sunburn is caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV light may be from sunlight or artificial sources, such as sunlamps and tanning beds.

Melanin is the dark pigment in the skin’s outer layer that gives skin its normal color. When you’re exposed to UV light, your body protects itself by producing melanin faster. The extra melanin creates tan. A suntan is the body’s way of blocking UV rays to prevent sunburn. But the protection only goes so far. Too much UV light causes skin to burn.

You can get sunburn on cool or cloudy days. Snow, sand, water and other surfaces can reflect UV rays that cause the skin to burn too.

≡ Oily Skin

The best way to care for Oily Skin

(a.k.a. Seborrhoea)

Φ 油性皮膚

Table of Contents

Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in the skin make too much sebum. Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin.

Sebum is vital for keeping the skin healthy. However, too much sebum can lead to oily skin, clogged pores, and acne. Managing oily skin often requires a person making regular skin care a habit.

  • a shiny or greasy appearance
  • very large or obvious pores on the skin
  • skin that looks thick or  tough
  • occasional or persistent pimples
  • clogged pores and  blackheads

People with oily skin may have trouble finding makeup to suit their skin, as the makeup can mix with the sebum, giving it a different consistency.

The symptoms of oily skin and their severity vary between people. Genetics may play a role in how oily the skin becomes.

Hormone changes or high-stress levels may also increase the production of oily sebum by the body.

Notice that your skin emits a little extra shine? Fact is, everyone has oil in their skin. Under each of your pores is a sebaceous gland that produces natural oils called sebum. This helps keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

In some people, though, the sebaceous glands can produce too much oil. This creates oily skin.

You know you have oily skin if your skin constantly looks shiny, and you go through several blotting sheets a day. Oily skin can even feel greasy within hours of cleansing.

Breakouts are also more likely because the sebum mixes with dead skin cells and gets stuck in your pores.

The causes of oily skin include genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. While you can’t necessarily get rid of oily skin, you can take steps to make your skin less oily. The key is to identify one or more of these seven underlying causes.

1. Genetics
Oily skin tends to run in families. If one of your parents has oily skin, you’re likely to have overactive sebaceous glands, too.

2. Age
While you don’t necessarily grow out of oily skin, your skin will indeed produce less sebum as you age. Aging skin loses protein, such as collagen, and the sebaceous glands slow down.

This is why many people who have aging skin also have dry skin. This is also the time when fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable because of the lack of collagen and sebum.

One benefit of oily skin is that you may not show signs of aging as quickly as your drier counterparts.

You may have oily skin now, but you’ll need to evaluate your skin as you get older. Even people in their 30s may not have the same skin composition as they did in their teens and 20s.
