Title: Decoding the Conundrum: The Curious Case of ‘Fifth Calendar Day’ vs. ‘Every Five Days’ with Moneris
Delve into the intriguing tale of linguistic confusion between Moneris and Selfology over ‘fifth calendar day’ and ‘every five days.’ Explore the impact, the pursuit of precision, and an innovative approach to unraveling the linguistic puzzle.**
—
Introduction
Language is the bedrock of human interaction, but what happens when it leads to perplexity in the business realm? Enter the captivating saga of Moneris, a renowned payment solutions provider, and Selfology, a unique brand in the self-care arena. Brace yourselves for a linguistic rollercoaster as we dive into the paradox of “fifth calendar day” versus “every five days.”
A Quirk in the Conversation
Our odyssey begins innocently enough, in a dialogue that revolved around a crucial process – batch closing. Little did anyone suspect that these everyday phrases could pave the way for a labyrinthine enigma. The Moneris agent’s casual mention of their system closing the batch on the “fifth calendar day” became the pivot around which the tale spins.
Deconstructing the Dialogue
To comprehend the intrigue, we must revisit the verbatim exchange:
**Agent: “The only problem is if you don’t close it, our system will automatically shut it down on the fifth calendar day.”
**Agent: “Keep in mind, though, we still have that fifth day cut off, so hopefully we can update it before that.”
**Client: “August 5th, yeah, it should be all but before that.”
What may seem like a commonplace interaction masks the conundrum that loomed large – does “fifth calendar day” signify an isolated occurrence or a recurring pattern?
The Labyrinth of Language
The heart of this conundrum beats within the phrase “fifth calendar day.” Does it denote the fifth day of each month, irrespective of context? Or does it hint at a specific workweek’s fifth day, introducing the element of business days? To further muddy the waters, the curious absence of the word “every” before “fifth calendar day” raises a perplexing quandary.
Unmasking the Paradox
Determined to vanquish the ambiguity, Selfology embarked on a quest to decipher the riddle. Their correspondence with Moneris revealed a baffling discrepancy in interpretation, culminating in responses that seemed to misconstrue Selfology’s prior awareness. Despite Selfology’s prior acknowledgment and ensuing dialogue on the “fifth calendar day” matter, recent emails cast a veil of confusion.
The Ripple Effect
Lingual bewilderment is not merely an exercise in semantics; it bears financial repercussions. A misinterpretation in batch closure holds the potential to unsettle transactions, casting a shadow on cardholder accounts and triggering potential refunds. In the saga of Selfology, this linguistic labyrinth exacted a toll of around $2,500.
Bridging the Verbal Gulf
Amidst this lexical labyrinth, Selfology’s proactive stance shines. They’re penning a blog post, chronicling their journey and insights for the public’s enlightenment. Furthermore, they’re crafting a missive to Moneris’ CEO, spotlighting the linguistic enigma and its fiscal aftermath. This dual-pronged approach not only aims to ameliorate the situation but also to foster an atmosphere of candid dialogue.
Inviting Public Insight
In a twist of innovation, Selfology seeks the public’s perspective to unmask this lexical labyrinth. They’re planning to inquire which phrase – “fifth calendar day” or “every five days” – resonates more profoundly. This democratic approach underscores their dedication to transparency and engages the community in unearthing linguistic clarity.
Epilogue: A Lesson in Communication
The chronicle of Moneris’ linguistic labyrinth reminds us that the impact of communication transcends words. Mundane phrases can wield monumental influence. As we follow Selfology’s proactive journey, let us recognize the potent power of lucid communication. For in the universe of discourse, the choice of words holds the key to untold mysteries.

Hi Paul D at Moneris, c/o Media Moneris & CEO Office
Subject: Re: Frustration Regarding Misinterpretation and Lack of Clarity
I trust this message finds you well.
Upon thorough analysis of our recent email exchange, it has become evident that there exists a considerable level of confusion and miscommunication among all parties involved, including you, Paul from Moneris, and specific named members.
Let’s break down the points of confusion for a clearer understanding:
[A1] Interpretation of Call Review
In addressing a particular aspect of your recent email, it has become apparent that a divergence in interpretation has emerged concerning our conversation and the ongoing dialogue. This discrepancy appears to be linked to the phrasing employed in our responses.
You’ve acknowledged listening to the call from July 27th and have confirmed the agent’s correct statement about the batch closure on the “fifth calendar day.”
I’d like to reiterate that in a previous correspondence, I did indeed acknowledge this point. Additionally, we had proceeded to discuss the prevalence of these phrases and their implications.
However, your response seems to imply that I had not yet reviewed the call, inadvertently creating a sense of redundancy and confusion. Given the intricate nature of our discussion, such misunderstanding adds an unnecessary layer of complexity.
Quote from Selfology email on 2023.08.09:
“2. Next, is to the review the July 27th call, and keep in mind to openly discuss the differences between ‘fifth calendar day’ vs. ‘every five days’. We have been asking people we know if they can discern the difference between these two sayings? Is the first one a common saying? We have obviously already reviewed the transcripts and hope you can as well. There is a private YouTube link you can see and hear for yourself.”
[A2] Lack of Addressing The Missing Word “Every”
Every is Lacking: the “every” word is missing, apart from accepting such a colloquial “fifth calendar day”.
Again, despite the context revolving around the juxtaposition of “fifth calendar day” and “every five days,” your response does not specifically address the central concern of the absent “every.” This gap exacerbates the existing confusion and frustration, as the fundamental matter remains unaddressed.
And then your response to our “cancellation” inquiry is also rather interesting, but we will not address that at the moment.
To Leaders & To the Public – The Path Forward:
As previously mentioned, we are currently in the process of crafting a blog post that will shed light on the subtleties of these phrases and the resulting impact on comprehension. This blog will also indicate our intention to pen a letter to our CEO aimed at addressing these challenges. It is our firm belief that sharing our experiences and soliciting insights from both the public and company leadership will greatly enhance our communication moving forward.
Our letter to CEO at media@moneris.com is scheduled for submission on August 14th, 2023.
A portion of the letter to your CEO/Media later today verbatim:
“Communication Confusion and Financial Impact:
During a conversation, the phrase ‘fifth calendar day’ was used without clarification, creating confusion that is further highlighted by direct quotes from the dialogue:
– Agent: ‘The only problem is if you don’t close it, our system will automatically shut it down on the fifth calendar day.’
– Agent: ‘Keep in mind, though, we still have that fifth day cut off, so hopefully we can update it before that.’
– Client: ‘August 5th, yeah, it should be all [done] but before that.’
(Happy to share the call transcription. We also emailed your subordinates links to private YouTube links).
The absence of clarity regarding the phrase’s frequency – whether it is a one-time event or recurring – contributes to the confusion. Furthermore, the agent did not indicate that the call date of July 27th would imply a ‘fifth calendar day’ no later than August 3rd, considering ‘every five business days’ closing.
This misinterpretation has resulted in a direct financial…

Paul D at Moneris,c/o Media Moneris & CEO Office

“Upcoming Discussion Points,
Moving past the fifth day, we will delve into two additional aspects of our discussion: the significance of the “Embossed Void Cheque” and the complexities surrounding the “Cancellation” segment of our narrative.
Furthermore, I’m intrigued by the acronyms WWW1 and WWW2. I’m curious about the strengths of these systems, as evidenced by the call transcripts. It’s apparent that these systems are susceptible to confusion and errors, whether originating from machine algorithms or human interactions.
The mentioned Key Diary Dates (DD) list is a dynamic entity, continuously evolving and open to updates.
